My Phone Number Is Being Spoofed – What Can I Do?

The goal of this document is to provide customers with immediate remedies and next steps to help combat spoofing attempts. This document will also offer guidance on how to report spoofing incidents to relevant authorities and how to inform your contacts about the situation to prevent further issues.

Overview

If someone says they received a call from your number—but you never made the call—your phone number is likely being spoofed. This means a scammer is using your number to disguise their identity when making spam or robocalls. Unfortunately, this is a common issue affecting people across all carriers.

While spoofing does not mean your phone or account has been hacked, it can be frustrating.

What is Phone Number Spoofing?

Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information shown on the recipient's caller ID to disguise their identity. Scammers do this to increase the chances that you'll answer the phone, or to impersonate someone you trust.

Is My Phone or Account Compromised?

No. Spoofing doesn’t require access to your phone, account, or personal data. The scammer is simply copying your number to appear as the caller ID—they’re not using your phone or service.

Steps to Take Right Now

  • Trace Back
    • Visit: Industry Traceback Group
    • Choose: "Resources"
    • Select the resource or resources that best fit your organization's needs.

  • Let Your Contacts Know
    • Tell friends, family, or colleagues that your number is being spoofed.
    • Advise them not to respond to strange calls or messages coming from your number.

  • Stay Patient
    • Spoofing is usually temporary.
    • Spoofing campaigns often rotate numbers.
    • In most cases, spoofing involving your number will stop on its own within a few days to weeks.
