How to Clear Teams Cache

Sometimes there is a need to delete Microsoft Teams cache to quicken the adoption of an in-band policy change or simply troubleshoot an issue. The challenge here is that the cache for Microsoft Teams is in multiple directories. This can be done manually but would result in a slow and tedious process. Below is a simple process to be able to clear this cache.

Process for Windows:

1. Close out of the Teams client completely by right clicking on the Teams icon in the bottom right corner of the task bar.

2. Open Windows Powershell as an administrator (search for Powershell, then right click and "Run As Administrator").

3. Copy and paste the text below into Powershell and press "Enter". (note that with Powershell

Get-ChildItem "C:\Users\*\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams\*" -directory | Where name -in ('application cache','blob storage','databases','GPUcache','IndexedDB','Local Storage','tmp') | ForEach{Remove-Item $_.FullName -Recurse -Force}

4. Re-open the Teams application

 

Process for Mac:

  1. Quit Microsoft Teams.
  2. From Finder click on Go - Connect to Folder...
  3. From the Folder window, type if "~/Library" (without the quotes) and click Go. A new Finder window will open at that location.
  4. Navigate to "Application Support/Microsoft/Teams"
  5. Delete all files and sub-folders in following folders.
    “Application Cache/Cache”
    “blob_storage”
    “Cache”
    “databases”
    “GPUCache”
    “IndexedDB”
    “Local Storage”
    “tmp”
  6. Restart Microsoft Teams.
